
Siam City Cement Plc (SCCC), manufacturer of Insee cement, is once again cooperating with the Chaipattana Foundation to continue the 880 Check Dams for His Majesty project for a second year. Concerns about global warming were expressed in the project this year as the company wishes to increase public awareness of the issue and encourage people to take part in solving it.
"During its opening in 2007, the project succeeded, the importance of promoting the creation of dams. This is one of His Majesty the initiatives for the preservation of the ecological balance, and this is an ideal gift for his 80 years," said Chan Tana Sukumanont, SCCC executive vice president for customer relations. Last year, 1055 check dams were built in Chiang Mai, Nan, Lamphun, which shows that the achievement of 20 percent over the original purpose. These include 972 dams are made from natural materials, and 83 concrete dams.
In 2008, SCCC plans to build another 880 check dams: 430 in San Kamphaeng, Phrao and Fang districts of Chiang Mai, 100 in Pua district of Nan, 100 Mae Tha district of Lamphun, 120 in Khao Kho district in Phetchabun, and 130 in Kaeng Khoi district in Saraburi. They will be built from natural materials, stone or concrete suitable for the geographical conditions, and appropriate materials to benefit the surrounding communities.
Local residents, students, the media, and the companys staff are taking part in the building of the dams and associated activities.
